It’s Cinco De Mayo and I think we all need something to celebrate!
Don’t forget the Tequila!
To be honest, until I wrote this blog, I never gave much thought about what the holiday was and why it was being celebrated as my mind goes right to the food for any holiday. My next thought was, “how do I make it healthy and delicious so that I can enjoy it?”.
Now that I am talking about celebrating the holiday, I decided I wanted to do a bit of research on it. Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5th, 1862. This had me wondering, why do we celebrate this victory here in the US? I found out it is due to a beer add campaign in the late 80’s. It was because of certain beverage companies during that time that turned Cinco de Mayo into what it is today. Who knew?!
While I will pass on the Corona, I now have a few drinks to choose from. Everything is on a continuum. Although the margarita can be delicious, I know that it is usually made with “margarita mix”(aka lots of sugar). A Paloma, which I genuinely enjoy on occasion is a little bit better, still has lots of sugar. I have created a modified version as my very own simple cocktail with 1 oz. Tequila, a splash of Spindrift grapefruit sparkling water (made with actual real fruit), and a squeeze of lime to top it all off. It is light, refreshing, and a great compliment to fajitas and guac!
